Nurturing International Talent
Every year the UK Premier League recruits players from around the world. The experience of leaving their home country and the support structures of family and team, combined with the expectations and pressures placed on them on arrival in the UK, mean this is a period of immense change and challenge. Many of the players are still teenagers, faced not only with cultural and language differences of a relocation but the risks and temptations that come with being in the public eye.
I provided 1-to-1 and group coaching for international footballers in the first few months of their arrival in the UK, supporting them to make a successful transition to their UK Premier League club.
Sessions explored the challenges of adapting to a new culture, identified strategies for a successful transition, as well as gave players the opportunity to ask questions about aspects of English culture they were struggling to understand.
Every player was provided with an accompanying resource – an ‘Introduction to English Culture’, which included an introduction to the UK, 10 culture topics from communication to pets to football culture, and signposts to other sources of support.
“I wanted to thank you for all your help. I am very happy to be offered sessions like this. It has prepared me for what to expect. Thanks” Player
